Essential oils can be used for many things. They can help you relax or improve concentration, bring about natural sleep and also revitalize. However, they have more uses than this and that is what most people do not realize.
Making a homemade bug spray from essential oils is easy when you know how. It is great for those who are trying to be more environmentally friendly or do not want to subject their families to dangerous chemicals. It can also work out cheaper than usual bug remedies and the recipe is really simple.
You need four or five main ingredients – cedar wood, juniper berry, patchouli, spikenard and frankincense. All of these are easily purchased essential oils and can be bought for a low price on the internet. You need to combine these ingredients in a plastic spray bottle with 8 drops of cedar wood essential oil, 3 drops of juniper berry, 8 drops of patchouli, 5 drops of spikenard and 4 oz of the frankincense hydrosol. Mix these all together and pour into the spray bottle and you will find that it is safe to use on both your skin and also your clothes. The pesky bugs won’t come anywhere near you!
There are other essential oils that you can use on their own that act as a natural bug repellent. Citronella is a great one and comes in essential oils, candles and many other things, all effective repellents and safe to use around children.
Orange essential oils are also great to repel bugs, alongside lemon and other citrus scents. However, it is not limited to citrus essential oils. Spearmint is another great one and some of them can also be used on bites to reduce the redness and pain.
Natural remedies are great to use instead of their more expensive and chemically based counterparts and are also much kinder to younger skin. If you are not happy using the essential oils on your skin in the form of a spray, then you could always try lighting scented candles in the area around you or dropping a couple of drops of the essential oils of your choice onto a small piece of cloth (old mismatched socks work great for this) and then simply pin it to your clothes.
So, next time you are looking for bug sprays, why not try making your own at home with organic essential oils? It may work out much cheaper and better in the long run!
