Essential Oil Smelling Salts

Unfortunately there are some people in the world who have chronic sinus problems. For many of us, we end up taking medication daily and often suffer frequent sinus infections as a result of the sinuses not functioning properly. But there are some things we can do to keep sinus problems in check.

One of the most convenient things you can do is make smelling salts. Now I know this sounds like a rather Victorian thing to do, but it really does help. And you can make several of them and keep them around the house. Keep one in your office and one by your bed so that you have one whenever you need one. You’ll need some Epsom salt, sea salt or kosher salt, and 10-15 drops of essential oil.

The most common essential oils used for sinus congestion is eucalyptus and peppermint. This is what makes up the scent in most over the counter vapor rubs. Other essential oils you can use are myrtle, lemongrass, pine, allspice, cajeput, lavender, lime, clove, spruce, lemon, spearmint, marjoram, rosemary and grapefruit. Some of these scents are very spicy, almost tingly. And others are fresh and clean, such as the citrus scents. Depending on your personal preference you can combine any of these to make up your 10-15 drops.

Another common use for smelling salts is to relieve migraine headaches. If you have ever suffered from a migraine you know that the only thing you want is relief from the pain and nausea. Unfortunately some smells can actually make the nausea worse, so use caution. Some essential oils that will help a migraine are bay, sweet marjoram and peppermint. In addition to using this blend for smelling salts you can also make a massage oil out of it and massage the back of your neck around to the front of your head to help release some tension. This will also get the essential oils directly into your blood stream which will help as well. Several of the recommended oils help dilate blood vessels and are muscle relaxers which aid in headache relief. Other smells that you may find helpful would be all the citrus scents, lemongrass, Roman chamomile, clary sage, eucalyptus, lavender and rosemary.

In addition to using this blend as smelling salts, they also function very well as bath salts. Use ¼ to 1/3 cup added to the running water. Just make sure the water isn’t too hot if you have a migraine, it can make the nausea worse.

Once mixed, these need to be stored tightly covered when not in use. Essential oils are volatile and they will evaporate if left uncovered. So once your smelling salts are mixed you can store them in an air tight jar, and only uncover to take a few deep breaths. While you can store your blends in a plastic container, it isn’t’ recommended since some of the oils can actually break down the plastic causing the plastic to leach chemicals into your blend.
