AS the name suggests it a leaf of the evergreen wild flowering shrub belonging to Lauraceae family. The upper Part of the leaf is smooth and shiny and olive green in color.The lower surface has protuberant rib and veins with light brown in color. Their aroma is delicate & fragrant and are bitter in taste. It is mainly cultivated in Europe, Mediterranean and arab countries. It is not commercially produced in india.
ESSENTIAL OIL
Bay (Laurus nobilis L.) leaf is cultivated mainly for industrial use in foods, drugs and cosmetics.The methods for its extraction are steam distillation, supercritical extraction and microwave hydro distillation.
Its main constituents are 1,8-cineole (22.8%), linalool (12.5%), α-terpinylacetate (11.4%) and methyl eugenol(8.1%).
USES
1. Anticonvulsant:- Due to the presence of methyleugenol, eugenol and pinene in the essential oil,it is used in medicine for the treatment of Epilepsy.
2. INHIBITION OF NITRIC OXIDE:- AS we know that Nitric oxide is a free radical,it is the source of various life threatening diseases.The metabolites eudesma,tetraol ,eudesma present in it impedes the growth of free radicals in the body.
3. Antifungal: -The bay leaf essential oils is hypersensitive agains the species belonging to Eurotium, Aspergillus and Penicillium genus.Therefore it helps to reduce their growth and prevents many fungal diseases like Aspergillosis, farmer's lung disease.
4. Insecticidal:-It is used in making fumigants as has toxic potency against the growth of flour beetle,diamomondback moth,bruchids.It is due to the presence of eucalyptol in the oil.
VAPOR THERAPY:- in vapor therapy When blended with massage oil it can sooth the aches and pain.It is also used for recovery of hair loss and improves the scalp condition.
