Santalum Album is the medium sized evergreen tree native of India, mostly found in the region of western peninsula basically from Nasik to Andhra and Karnataka. It belongs to santalaceace family and is a semi-parasite root in seedling stage. It is known for its heartwood which is used to extract the oil from it. Scented heartwood is dark brown in color and has natural luster. Its vernacular name is chandanam or chandan.
An interested fact about the heartwood is that, it takes 30 years to fully develop the wood. Fully developed heartwood will be 8cm thick and ready to extract oil from it

Sandalwood Fragrance oil is extracted by hydro or steam distillation steam of roughly powdered chunks and roots of the plant Sandal wood plant. The stream is percolated at high pressure through the billets of heartwood and its roots stored in stills. Then oil floats over the water and is skim stored for further refinement by redistilling with vacuum steam. Then fragrant oil is produced by blending it with lavender, rose or bergamot.
Chemical Composition of Sandalwood Fragrance Oil
Oil mainly consists of two isomers of sesquiterpene alcohols, Alpha-Santalol and Beta-Santalol.
