The myrrh tree belongs to the genus Commiphora. Its components have been used since ancient times as perfume, incense and for medicinal purposes as well. Myrrh absolute is a resin which is derived from wounding the myrrh tree. The wounds in the tree bleed out a gum which is waxy and yellowish in color. The gum darkens as it ages and becomes hard and glossy over time. The myrrh has also been mentioned in the bible as one of the three gifts bestowed on Christ as a child, by the three wise men.
